Who Will Be the Dallas Cowboys’ Signal Caller in 2024 and Beyond?

Then you have backup quarterback, Cooper Rush. The long-time veteran has longevity with the Cowboys since first arriving in 2017.

Rush still has one year left on his contract and has been a steady fixture on the roster. His accomplishments as a starting quarterback show an achievement of 5-1 during 2021 and 22.

The 30-year-old also helps out Prescott on the sidelines and acts as an assistant coach at times. He could end up moving onto a coaching role as did Kellen Moore in 2018.

Whatever happens, Rush could still be the backup to either Prescott or Trey Lance.

Then enters the young Lance who might not have been here if it weren’t for an unfortunate circumstance.

The 24-year-old was set to be the San Francisco 49er’s starter in 2022. Sadly, he fractured his ankle in week two.

How Lance was Acquired

The upcoming prospect was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 4th round pick. Lance only went 2-2 as a starter in a petite package size, but it’s too early to call him a flop.

He may be part of the worst draft trade in NFL history, but has a chance to be a part of the premiere offseason trades. That’s only if he becomes the starter in 2025, but the Cowboys failed to even pick up his fifth-year option.

What Lance Can Be as the Potential Heir Apparent

Lance definitely has the tools to redeem himself and become the next great Cowboys quarterback after Prescott. Much like Prescott, he is very mobile and is effective in the RPO game with his legs.

The North Dakota State alumni also has a cannon for an arm and is an intelligent kid with high character.

Another plus is he already has the trench players and the athletes around him to be able to be like Prescott and, hopefully, help the Cowboys finally solve their NFC conference and playoff struggles.

Nevertheless, Lance has an idea of how this offense works, however, it’s hard when you’re team struggles to win in the playoffs.

Is Prescott All to blame?

I don’t think Prescott is the best quarterback in the league, but is it all his fault? The answer is no.

As previously mentioned, the Cowboys’ defense went missing in the playoffs last year, especially with the run defense.

This may have contributed to Dan Quinn taking the head coaching job with the Washington Commanders.

Plus, Prescott showed in the offseason he is a “team first player”, by having his contract reworked to free up cap space. That is being a leader at the game’s most important position.

Prescott still has yet to win a Super Bowl for the Cowboys. It’s a winning business and tough decisions may have to be made if the determined quarterback doesn’t come through for “America’s Team” this year.

The quarterback receives all the glory and all the blame. Therefore for the Cowboys, the time to win is now.
