PGA Championship contender's brother pokes fun at Scottie Scheffler arrest

Nathan Hubbard, the brother of PGA Tour's Mark Hubbard, appeared to poke fun at world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler's Friday morning arrest on social media.

Mark finished round one of the 2024 PGA Championship with a six-under 65, good for a tie for second place. The 34-year-old was scheduled to tee off his second round at 10:41 a.m. ET on Friday.
Scheffler carded a four-under 67 on Thursday and teed off just after 10 a.m. ET on Friday.

The two-time Masters champion was arrested by Louisville Metro Police early Friday morning after he attempted to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the host of the season's second major. The dramatic scene came just hours ahead of when the second round was scheduled to begin, but action was delayed after a shuttle bus struck and killed a pedestrian outside the course.

Scheffler was originally scheduled to tee off his second round at 8:48 a.m. ET.

Per ESPN's Jeff Darlington, traffic outside the host site was stopped "around 5 a.m. ET," and Scheffler was "trying to drive around the crash scene on a median."

"A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance," Darlington told ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

Darlington wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, at 6:35 a.m. ET that the 27-year-old had "been detained by police in handcuffs after a misunderstanding with traffic flow led to his attempt to drive past a police officer into Valhalla Golf Club."

"The police officer attempted to attach himself to Scheffler’s car, and Scheffler then stopped his vehicle at the entrance to Valhalla. The police officer then began to scream at Scheffler to get out of the car. When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs. He is now being detained in the back of a police car," Darlington wrote.

Schlabach wrote that Darlington was "standing at the entrance" when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?" but an officer told the reporter to back away.

Per Schlabach's report, Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer (a felony), third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The latter three charges are misdemeanors, according to the report.

Nathan Hubbard, the CEO and founder of Firebird (a music startup) and Rival (a ticketing startup), explained that when he and his brother arrived at the course, "they let [them] in," and "everyone was nice." He added an update at 9:12 a.m. ET that Scheffler arrived at the club.

Mark has never won a major, finishing as good as tied for 51st at the 2020 PGA Championship. He's only made the cut at two majors, finishing 75th at the 2023 PGA Championship.
