Ohio State Buckeyes and Ryan Day working through quarterback battle ahead of 2024 college football season
Adam Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Ohio State Buckeyes have one of the most stacked quarterback rooms in the entirety of college football. And this spring there has been non-stop chatter about the quarterback battle in Columbus. Head coach Ryan, various positional coaches, and media members have all talked up at least three of the quarterbacks on the team as potentially "in the mix" to start in 2024 throughout this spring. But which quarterback actually starts? And is there any clarity on this yet?

Just this week several Ohio State podcasts, live shows, and fan sites have sparked that debate up again as Ryan Day shared his thoughts on the state of the quarterback room. And just like last year, it seems that Ryan Day has another QB decision to make heading into the summer.

In a radio spot this week with 97.1 The Fan, Ryan Day mentioned all five of his quarterbacks by name and that he hopes they all have a healthy competition this summer as he and the team tries to decide who to start this fall.

Fans and media members may want a clear answer sooner than Day is willing give, but he reminded everyone that, "if you want to come to Ohio State, you want to compete", and that's what he's asking of all his quarterbacks now.

However, Day also made it clear that he does not want the competition running into the season like it did a year ago between Devin Brown and Kyle McCord:

"I think the way things turned out last year...it kind of went into the first couple games of the season...that's not ideal...but it's going to come down to playing the best players."

Who the "best players" at quarterback are is truly yet to be confirmed for Ohio State, but all evidence points towards one of the team's top three options.

Will Howard brings the most experience, having started nearly 30 games in his time at Kansas State. He certainly impressed this spring. Devin Brown was right on the edge of winning the starting job last season, and has shown strong commitment to the Buckeyes, staying with them for over two years now without any starting job promised to him. And lastly, Julian Sayin--former five star and Elite 11 Competition MVP--looked the part all spring as well despite just being a true freshman.

The most likely outcome at starting quarterback for Ohio State is probably Will Howard given his experience and dual threat ability, but Ryan Day--at least for now--is acting like this is an open competition ahead of the 2024 college football season.
